Globecomm Maritime recently rolled out its new service, Access Chat Plus — an optimized chat and video conferencing service specifically designed for maritime satellite communications. Access Chat Plus allows maritime users to make video calls and chat live via satellite using only a fraction of the data and at a competitive price of shore side applications.
The new service from Globecomm also offers instant messaging and voice calling, same as its predecessor, Access Chat, but with the addition of video conferencing. The company offers both versions of the service in various price ranges for corporate and crew use, with customized pricing available when the service is bundled with Globecomm’s airtime service contracts.
In a company statement, Globecomm SVP for Sales & Marketing Trevor Whitworth said: “Demand for video conferencing and instant messaging has experienced rapid growth, but while land-based users have become accustomed to its convenience, shipboard staff need tools that are designed for the constraints of satellite communications. Voice and video conferencing applications use a great deal of bandwidth and that makes it very expensive for seafarers. We identified the need for a tool that gives ships the same functionality but keeps cost under control.”
Both services from Globecomm Maritime are very “light” applications when it comes to setup and data usage. Access Chat and Access Chat Plus are no more than 1Mb in size, and can be easily installed on any Android device or in Windows, with an Apple OS version scheduled to be released on the second quarter of 2013.
